Fifteen years ago I was a prolific listserv junkie. Back then it was the best way of communicating with others in the techcomm world, sharing information, learning new skills, and solving problems. Over the years I’ve met a lot of people, made many friends, and even ticked a few people off. (Yes, me. Can you believe it?) I also seemed to have engaged in a very long, slow, informal interview process that I’m happy to say has finally concluded.
As of today, I am officially working with Scriptorium. Sarah O’Keefe and I have always talked about working together, but we never seemed to find that mutually opportune moment. Until now.
Sarah was one of the first people I’d regularly chatted with online, back in the days when Quadralay was flirting with the idea of slapping a “version 2.0″ on WebWorks Publisher. We were a part of a handful of people who first dove head-first into the intricacies of physically mapping once traditional print content to online form. As you would expect, this small group chatted frequently, sharing how-to information, new discoveries, WTF moments, and helping each other troubleshoot projects.
Over the years our paths diverged a bit, though we kept in touch online and at conferences where I also came to know Alan, Simon, and most recently Gretyl. Scriptorium dove into the multichannel publishing arena and became widely known for their expertise in content strategy and of course all things DITA. My career took me on a bit of a roller coaster ride through content strategy, management and distributed team leadership, process improvement, and localization. Now that we are working together, I look forward to pooling our knowledge and experience to do some pretty nifty things.
I’m very happy to be hopping aboard Scriptorium. They are a great group of people doing some pretty amazing work. They’re also big time foodies, like me, which will make for some excellent team outings when I visit the Durham, NC office (I’ll be remote from upstate NY).
Thanks again to everyone who congratulated me at Lavacon, where we kind of spilled the beans. I hope to see many of you at Intelligent Content in February!
