If I were to speak at STC 2011 Summit…

Despite not knowing what 2011 will look like for me, I’m trying to plan conference engagements for 2011. The first open call for proposals I’m entertaining is for the STC 2011 Summit. I know there will be plenty of tools and tech writing sessions, so I wanted to focus on something different yet valuable. What I keep coming back to are soft skills and general communication practices.

If you wouldn’t mind, please consider the following possible topic ideas and let me know if it’s of interest to you, if it’s not of interest, and why. And of course, if there’s anything you think I know or know I know that I may not think or know I know, please let me know. Ya know? ;-)

  • how to be a successful manager vs. just a boss (yes, there is a difference)
  • leadership fundamentals – how to be a leader without being in charge (if you can’t join ‘em, beat ‘em… or something like that)
  • collaborating in geographically dispersed teams (quite the common situation these days, and usually execution could be better)
  • how to overcome resistance to involvement (in teams, with appropriate level of infrastructure access, at the right project stages, etc. – what, if anything, is of value to you here?)
  • making friends and influencing people – why it’s not just flowery management/leadership rhetoric

Conference hotel Wi-Fi pricing: Your thoughts, please

July 25, 2010 Conferences

I’m trying to collect thoughts on Wi-Fi pricing at conference hotels. While many US motels and lower star hotels provide free internet access of some kind (wired in room or Wi-Fi throughout), most higher star hotels and conference centers still charge for Wi-Fi access.
Conference attendees seem like prime targets for gouging. History shows that they [...]

Should STC Summit adopt social media event tools?

July 13, 2010 Conferences

I’d posed this question in a few circles to mixed feedback. While some agree it is more than time for STC to step up and employ more interactive/informative technologies, others seem averted to the idea, in some cases seeing it as an attack on those who aren’t riding the tech/social media trend.
The idea is simple: [...]

Circumventing the Conference Void

May 19, 2009 Knowledge

Let’s face it, the economy sucks right now. Companies are running lean, laying people off, cutting travel and education expenses, and in the wake of all this, conferences are taking a beating. If you haven’t heard by now, PUBSNET has closed shop, which means all future DocTrain conferences are kaput. I’ve been hearing from others [...]
