SDL Author Assistant now free plugin for FrameMaker

It looks like Author Assistant – SDL’s content author plug-in for grammar and phrase checking – is now a free plugin for FrameMaker 9. This utility caught my eye a few years back for its ability to check what you write against your existing translation memory in order to maximize 100% matches when translating your documentation.

I find it an interesting move that this plug-in (which I was quoted at costing roughly $2k per seat!) is now free and available not on SDL’s web site, but on Adobe’s. Is this a partnership that will be growing over time? Or is this a very bold marketing/sales tactic for SDL? Either way, if you’re using FrameMaker 9, give this plugin a test run. I’m not sure how useful it will be on its own, but if you  have managed translation memory to work with, you may find yourself saving a bundle on your future translations!
