I bit the wax tadpole

Language is an amazing and beautiful yet dangerous thing, especially when crossing its barriers. Just as Coca-Cola learned about it’s Mandarin transliteration, I too recently discovered an interesting twist to my long-standing personal brand ‘techcommdood’. One of my LinkedIn connections wrote me with the following:

I can see the dude/dood gimmick in your blog’s name, but each time I see it, for one microsecond only, my native language forces me to read it as the Dutch word “dood”. It’s meaning: “death” or “dead”.

Well, the cat’s out of the bag, folks. I am the death of tech comm! ;-)

You’ve been warned.

iPhone spelling suggestions (enough is enough)

June 28, 2010 Uncategorized

I’ve had my iPhone for about two years now, and although I am extremely happy with the device overall, there are still some features and behaviors that bother me. One in particular: the spelling suggestions that pop up when you’re composing on the iPhone.
The default behavior is to show one (not several, but one) suggestion [...]

Beginnings of an idea: How I think STC should approach initiatives

June 22, 2010 Management

All this RFP talk on Twitter and on the SIG Leaders mailing list has got me to thinking: How can STC efficiently plan, track, and implement initiatives?
The RFP process is old-school. It’s slow. It’s tedious. STC Board doesn’t have time; they need to be attending to Board matters. STC Office doesn’t have time; they need to [...]

RSS 101: How to subscribe to content feeds

June 21, 2010 Information Delivery

This post is in answer to the STC-issued RFP for a RSS tutorial. I personally think a RFP is overkill, and since the web is littered with useful info about RSS already, I put together this quick and dirty 101 tutorial. I wrote it in 10 minutes, so please pardon its 101ness.
STC members [...]

What gives you that feeling of accomplishment?

June 21, 2010 Careers

I’ve been thinking lately about how to best shape my job search. I’ve been working as an independent consultant since my December 2008 layoff, and while I’m enjoying the work and the money it brings in, I’ve had a nagging feeling that something has been missing. While I can certainly apply [...]

Chrome/WebHelp issue update with thoughts from a HAT vendor

June 10, 2010 Information Delivery

Image via Wikipedia

As reported yesterday, an update to Google Chrome has crippled most browser-based Help formats as well as JavaDoc. Google has been active in developing a solution, as evident in reported incidents 46167 and 39767. While there is a current means around this, it involves bypassing file action restrictions via the command line, which [...]

June 9, 2010 Information Delivery

This was brought up today on techwr-l, and several people have confirmed that at least the latest build and perhaps the previous build of Chrome has issues displaying locally-viewed WebHelp generated from the following confirmed sources (there may be others):

RoboHelp
Flare
Help & Manual

If you encounter this issue, please report it to Google to call [...]

Video as a need-it-now content delivery medium?

June 4, 2010 Content Development

Image via Wikipedia

More and more I’m seeing references to videos for product walk-throughs and how-to information. While these are informative, I’m seeing a trend where as video is used more, context-appropriate traditional text-based information is in decline. When I have 30 minutes of down time, I enjoy watching these videos, but in the heat of [...]

Using Conditional Text in Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2

June 3, 2010 Content Development

Image via Wikipedia

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you’ve likely seen my frustration in trying to get conditional text to work in a linked file scenario with FrameMaker 9 and RoboHelp 8. I’m writing this post to help others who may be struggling with this issue, and to alert Adobe to a need for [...]
